Ural Umbo was formed by Reto Mäder (RM74, Sum of R)  from Bern, Sitzerland and Steven Hess (Haptic, On, Pan American) from Chicago, USA in 2008. The music of Ural Umbo is an organic and hypnotic mix of lurking electro-acoustics, atmospheric black metal approaches, epic drones, slow evolving melodies, filigree percussion layers, psychedelic intervals, doom mantras, soundtrack themes and ritual drum eruptions.

Reto Mäder
Apart of Ural Umbo, Mäder works solo as RM74 as well as in the avantgarde/doom trio Sum Of R (with Roger Ziegler and Christoph Hess aka Strotter Inst., both members of Herpes Ö DeLuxe). He has also produced albums for Rhys Chatham (The Bern Project, 2009) and for Herpes Ö DeLuxe (Kielholen, 2007). Since 2006 Reto Mäder runs together with Roger Ziegler the music label Hinterzimmer Records.

Steven Hess 
Steven Hess also performs with Haptic, On, as well as solo. He has collaborated/recorded/performed with the likes of Stefan Németh, Pan American, Christian Fennesz, Robert Hampson, Helge Sten, Martin Seiwert, Greg Davis, Locrian, and Jon Mueller, among others. He has also appeared on recordings by Dropp Ensemble, David Daniell + Douglas McCombs, Male, Sylvain Chauveau, and Fessenden to name a few.
